Why sync costs money and the app doesn't
Storing everyone's food photos and running sync servers costs me money every month. Apps that say hosting is free usually end up paying for it with ads, a paywall, or by shutting down.
Why the app is free
Your recipes are saved on your own device, and the AI features run there too. That costs me nothing, so the app is free, with no limit on recipes.
What $39 once actually covers
I'd rather not promise a vague ‘lifetime’. $39 covers sync for as long as Gratin 1 runs, and at least five years. If it ends sooner, you get a refund for the time left.
You can always leave
Even with paid sync, your recipes are kept on your devices. You can export them all, photos included, or move to your own sync server whenever you want.
Questions
Is the free app the full app, or a trial?
It’s the full app, with no recipe limit and no time limit. You only pay if you want us to run your sync, which also gets you the Claude and ChatGPT connection.
What happens if I stop paying for Yearly?
Sync stops. Everything stays on your devices and keeps working. If you subscribe again later, sync carries on where it left off.
What does ‘the life of Gratin 1’ mean?
Sync is covered for as long as we run it for Gratin 1, and for at least five years from the day you buy. If we shut it down within those five years, you get at least 90 days’ notice in the app and a refund for the unused time. The same goes if we change the terms for the worse (with 30 days’ notice). If there’s ever a Gratin 2, you get a discount on it.
How much is 50 GB?
About 100,000 recipes with photos. On your own devices, the only limit is your disk space.
How does this compare with Paprika?
Paprika is sold separately on each platform: about $30 on Mac, $30 on Windows and $5 each on iPhone and Android, so $35 to $70 for a computer and a phone. Its sync is included. Gratin is free everywhere, and sync is $12 a year or $39 once for all your devices.
Can you read my recipes if I pay for sync?
No. Your recipes and photos are encrypted on your device before they're synced, with a key only you have. The exception is the Claude and ChatGPT connection: while it's on, our server keeps a readable copy for the assistant, and the assistant sees what it reads. Switch it off and our copy is deleted.
How do I run sync on my own server?
This one is for the technically minded. In Settings → Sync, switch to Advanced. Enter the address of your own Evolu relay, plus an S3-compatible bucket (Cloudflare R2, for example) for your encrypted photos. Then add your other devices by scanning the QR code or entering your recovery phrase.
