    The ten-year veteran. It runs on every major platform, has a built-in browser for saving recipes, plus meal calendars, and you pay once per platform. Buying both desktop ($30) and mobile ($5) adds up, its export flattens nested folders, and the design looks dated.

Questions about choosing a recipe app

Which recipe app is best if my household mixes Apple, Windows, and Android?

Mela, Crouton and Pestle only run on Apple devices. Of the rest, Gratin is the only one with its own Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android apps that’s free with no recipe limit. Encrypted sync between them is optional ($12/yr or $39 once).

Which recipe apps don’t need a subscription?

Gratin (free app; sync is $39 once, or free on your own server), Paprika (paid once per platform), Mela (paid once per Apple platform), Recipe Keeper (paid once per platform), Crouton (one-time Plus upgrade) and RecipeSage (free, funded by donations) all work without a yearly bill.

Which recipe apps keep my recipes on my own device?

Gratin, Paprika, Mela, Crouton, Pestle and Recipe Keeper all store your recipes on your device, so you can cook offline. Gratin can also export everything in a standard recipe format with photos included, or as Cooklang files, and you can run its encrypted sync server yourself.
