Paprika earned its reputation. It's polished, it's on every platform, and it's a one-time purchase in a world full of subscriptions. For a lot of people it's the right choice, and we'll happily say so.
But two things send people looking. You buy Paprika again on each platform you use, and everything syncs through Paprika's own cloud in Paprika's own format. Your recipes sit on your device, yet the sync, and the long-term fate of your collection, belongs to one company. Gratin takes a different path.
Gratin vs Paprika Recipe Manager, side by side

Paprika is cheaper up front, plainly, and our own $39 buy-once plan makes the same bet Paprika does: money now against a sync cost that never stops. We're not going to pretend we've cracked something they haven't. The real difference isn't the pricing, it's the architecture: your recipes are local-first and the relay is self-hostable, so you aren't tied to our cloud the way Paprika ties you to theirs. Same pricing tension on both sides; the difference is you can't be held hostage by ours. The app is free, and $12/year is there if you'd rather not pay once.

Why people move to Gratin
One app, every device, no re-buying
Gratin runs on Mac, Windows, and mobile, and you never pay again to add a device. Paprika is a separate purchase per platform.
Easy in, easy out
First-class Paprika import: load your Paprika export, then sign in to pull back the folder hierarchy the export leaves flat. And because Gratin exports to open, standard formats, you can always take it out again.
Sync you can host yourself
Paprika sync runs only through Paprika. Gratin's sync is an end-to-end encrypted relay you can run yourself, use ours for $12/year or a one-time $39, or switch off entirely.
The verdict
If you love Paprika's one-time pricing but resent paying per platform and living in its cloud, Gratin gives you a free, local-first home for your recipes that you truly own, with optional sync you control. Keep Paprika if it's working. Try Gratin if you'd rather own the data than rent the sync.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gratin really free when Paprika charges once?
Yes. The Gratin app is free on every platform. The only optional cost is $12/year or a one-time $39 if you want us to host your sync, and if you're technical you can self-host that relay yourself instead.
Can I import my Paprika recipes?
Yes, and it's first-class. Export your library from Paprika (a .paprikarecipes file) and import it straight into Gratin, photos and all. Paprika's export is flat, so it drops your folders, but the Gratin desktop app can also sign in to your Paprika account and pull the folder hierarchy back in. You get your whole collection, folders and all.
Does Gratin work offline like Paprika?
Yes. Gratin is local-first: your recipes live on your device and work with no connection. Sync is optional.
